Bangladesh’s bowlers dominated the opening day of the first Test against Australia in Darwin, dismissing the hosts for just 198 after Hasan Mahmud claimed a career-best 6-55.
Australia won the toss and elected to bat, reaching 45 without loss before Hasan removed openers Jake Weatherald (23) and Travis Head (22) in quick succession. Taskin Ahmed (2-55) and Ebadot Hossain (2-39) then exploited the green-tinged wicket to keep the hosts in check.
Steve Smith’s gritty 71 held the innings together, but he was the ninth batter to fall, top-edging Hasan to wicketkeeper Litton Das. Hasan finished with his third five-wicket haul in Test cricket, ending Australia’s innings after 53 overs.
In reply, Bangladesh reached 96-1 by stumps, with Mominul Haque unbeaten on 35 and Tanzid Hasan on 32. The only breakthrough came when Shadman Islam (20) offered a leading edge to Nathan Lyon off Mitchell Starc.
