Swansea City has been dealt a significant blow on the eve of the new Championship season, with scans confirming that centre-back Cameron Burgess has suffered a ruptured Achilles.
The club stated that Burgess faces surgery and a "significant spell on the sidelines" following his injury during their EFL Cup defeat to Birmingham City last weekend. The 30-year-old may miss the entire 2026-27 Championship campaign, depending on his recovery.
Burgess, an Australia international who featured in this summer's World Cup, was a key figure in Swansea's defence last season, playing every minute of league football. In his absence, summer signing Stephen Welsh and academy product Filip Lissah are contenders to start at centre-back when Swansea begins their league campaign against Stoke City on Saturday. The Swans are expected to seek at least one more central defender before the transfer window closes.
