Barnsley College is offering 200 students access to a virtual reality driving simulator to help them develop driving skills and save money. The Driver Accreditation Scheme (DAS) will also provide financial support for provisional licences and theory tests.
College principal David Akeroyd stated that the cost of learning to drive is a significant barrier for many students, making it prohibitive. He added that the scheme aims to give students an advantage in the job market, particularly as one in six UK jobs requires a valid driving licence.
Priority access to the simulators for the college's 6,000 students will be based on attendance, engagement, and participation in volunteering. The virtual sessions will be complemented by in-person driving lessons before students take their practical tests.
