A high school in Michigan is facing scrutiny over a gym class policy that requires female students to disclose details about their menstrual cycles. Lakeview High School's gym syllabus states that female students who miss swimming due to their periods must have a parent submit a written note or email identifying the length of their menstrual cycle to make up the missed days.
The syllabus specifies that students will complete dry land workouts to make up the days, and any days not made up will be considered non-participation, leading to a grade reduction. Andy Amsdill, a parent whose daughter attends Lakeview High School, expressed his surprise upon seeing the requirement in her gym syllabus.
Bryan Shishakly, another parent, stated that his daughter's grade was affected by this requirement during her freshman year. Lakeview Public Schools superintendent Karl D Paulson issued a statement acknowledging a parent's concern and stated the district is committed to meeting with the parent to discuss the issue.
