Ben Stokes, the former England national team captain, has firmly rejected any notions of reversing his recent retirement to play in the 2027 Ashes series. Speaking for the first time since his decision in June to quit Test cricket, the 35-year-old revealed his long-term ambition is to coach England.
Stokes told the Love of Cricket podcast that he is currently pursuing his level three coaching qualification. He stated, "I want to be a coach. I know what I want to do in terms of staying within the game which is to be a coach. And would I love to be coach of England one day? Absolutely."
The former captain also shared his surprise regarding the decision not to appoint Harry Brook as Test captain, despite Brook leading the white-ball sides. Stokes had backed Brook for the role, questioning the message it sent to the vice-captain.
Stephen Fleming has been confirmed as the new coach of the men’s Test team, with Joe Root returning as captain. Stokes wished Root success, expressing concern for his former teammate given Root's previous experience in the role.
