Bev Craig has been elected as the new Mayor of Greater Manchester, securing 309,525 votes in Thursday's by-election. Reform candidate Sian Astley received 157,178 votes.
Ms Craig will succeed Andy Burnham, who stepped down as mayor to contest the Makerfield by-election in June. Following her victory, Ms Craig appeared at a Labour rally in Manchester alongside Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
The new mayor stated that Prime Minister Burnham's decision to devolve more power to the regions could "change our lives." She expressed her commitment to utilising the power and control offered to mayors to improve their regions.
Among her campaign pledges, Ms Craig has promised to freeze Metrolink and bus fares on the Bee Network and to extend free bus travel to 11 to 18-year-olds. Currently, this scheme benefits 16 to 18-year-olds. She also committed to delivering 50,000 new homes, including council properties and affordable housing, over the next 15 years, and launching a new £20m high street scheme.
