Bev Craig has been elected as the new Mayor of Greater Manchester, taking over from Andy Burnham. Her election utilised the supplementary vote system, which considers voters' second preferences if no candidate achieves over half the vote in the initial round.
In the first round, Labour secured 47% of the vote. However, it is estimated that approximately seven in 10 progressive voters who initially backed other parties subsequently supported Craig with their second preferences.
Looking ahead, a vote is scheduled for 2 September in the Commons on an elections bill amendment. This amendment proposes establishing a national commission to explore proportional representation.
