1892 Holdings, the new investor in Liverpool, has secured an option to become the club's majority shareholder within the next 12 months, should Fenway Sports Group (FSG) decide to sell. The consortium, which includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and is led by Amit Bhatia, has acquired a 38% stake in the Anfield club.
The agreement saw 1892 Holdings pay FSG just over £2bn, valuing Liverpool at approximately £5.5bn. While FSG maintains operational control and has stated the deal is not part of an exit strategy, the option gives 1892 Holdings the right to buy a controlling stake if FSG reduces its shareholding in the coming year.
Bezos is considered a passive investor at this stage, having invested through the K5 Sports fund. Bryan Baum of K5 Global, alongside Bhatia and Elaine Saverin, wife of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, will join an expanded Liverpool board.
