Venus Williams receives US Open wildcard, Serena's entry remains possible

Venus Williams has been granted a main draw singles wildcard for the US Open, with one spot remaining open that could be filled by her sister Serena.

  • Venus Williams, 46, is a two-time US Open winner.
  • Serena Williams, 44, made a singles comeback this summer after four years away from the sport.
  • Seven of eight singles wildcards have been announced for both men's and women's main draws.

Venus Williams has been named among the main draw singles wildcards for this year’s US Open. The 46-year-old, a two-time winner at Flushing Meadows, last played a grand slam match in January at the Australian Open.

One singles wildcard spot remains unannounced for both the men's and women's main draws. This leaves open the possibility for Serena Williams to receive an entry, should she continue her comeback.

Serena Williams, 44, returned to tennis this summer after a four-year absence. She and Venus recently played together at the Cincinnati Open, and could potentially partner again in New York as doubles wildcards are yet to be announced.

Other singles wildcards include 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens and Gael Monfils, a former semi-finalist who is retiring at the end of the year. Stan Wawrinka, a 2016 champion, could receive the final men's spot.
