Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are reportedly open to selling their stakes in Chelsea to Clearlake Capital. This potential deal could value the club at approximately £5bn.
Clearlake Capital initially invested 61.6% in Chelsea, bringing owners Behdad Eghbali and José E Feliciano into leadership. Boehly became the public face of the winning bid, convincing Walter and Hansjörg Wyss to join as 12.8% minority investors.
Mark Walter, a long-term friend and business partner of Boehly, is reportedly under investigation by the US Department of Justice for alleged tax fraud. He is believed to be selling assets to pay loans facing federal attention, having recently sold the Los Angeles Lakers.
If a sale is agreed, Clearlake owners Eghbali and Feliciano would gain full control of the club. Boehly's five-year tenure as Chelsea chair is set to conclude at the end of the current season.
