Lisa, a member of Blackpink, has made history as the first Asian solo artist to win Best Pop at the MTV Video Music Awards. She received the award for her collaboration "Dream" with Japanese actor Kentaro Sakaguchi, triumphing over nominees including Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Olivia Rodrigo.
The 29-year-old Thai singer expressed her gratitude, thanking MTV and her fans, known as Lilies, stating, "All those late-night dreams brought me here today." Lisa also performed her new hip-hop single "SaWaDiKa" at the ceremony, which is set to feature on her forthcoming EP, Press Play, due on 23 October.
Meanwhile, K-pop group BTS achieved a clean sweep of their three nominations, securing Song of the Year and Best K-pop for "Swim," the lead single from their fifth studio album, Arirang, as well as Best Group. This marks BTS's first win in the Song of the Year category, making them the first K-pop group to receive the honour.
The awards coincide with BTS's return as a full seven-member group following a nearly four-year hiatus for mandatory military service. Although not present at the ceremony due to scheduling conflicts, BTS accepted their awards via a statement from their agency, Big Hit Music, thanking their fanbase, ARMY, and stating they would "continue to present great music and performances together as seven members."
