Boy George criticises Bandcamp after 'We Will Dance Again' removal

Boy George has criticised Bandcamp after the platform removed his profile, preventing access to his song 'We Will Dance Again'. The song, which has divided opinion, was reportedly created with AI assistance.

  • Boy George's profile and song 'We Will Dance Again' have been removed from Bandcamp.
  • Boy George stated the song was inspired by his visit to the Nova Music Festival Exhibition and meetings with those affected by the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack.
  • Bandcamp's policy does not permit music generated wholly or substantially by AI, which Boy George confirmed he used to help create the track.

Boy George has expressed strong disapproval of Bandcamp after the platform removed his profile, making his song 'We Will Dance Again' unavailable. The singer shared a video on Instagram, captioning it "What a bunch of c***s!" and encouraged those who already possess the song to share it online.

The song, released last month, has generated debate due to its stance, which appears to challenge descriptions of Israel's military campaign in Gaza as genocide and criticises musicians who have publicly supported Palestine. Boy George stated the track was inspired by his visit to the Nova Music Festival Exhibition in London and conversations with individuals affected by the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023.

It is not yet clear if the removal is due to the song's political content or its creation method. Boy George previously confirmed using AI to help generate the track, and Bandcamp's policy prohibits the upload of music "generated wholly or in substantial part by AI."

Following the song's release, the Culture Club singer withdrew from a two-week run as King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium and separated from his record label manager who declined to release the track. Boy George has responded to criticism by stating the song is intended to be "pro-peace" and that he is "devastated for the loss of the innocent lives on both sides of this war."
