Kenya's Brigid Kosgei claimed a dominant win in the women's race at the Great North Run today, finishing the 13.1-mile course in one hour, six minutes and 15 seconds. Kosgei, a former London Marathon winner, ran much of the race alone.
Eilish McColgan, who had been recovering from a toe injury, withdrew early in the race after sustaining a foot injury. Last year's winner, Sheila Chepkirui, finished second, with Amy-Eloise Neale being the first British athlete to cross the line in fifth place.
In the men's race, American Zouhai Talbi emerged victorious, clocking 59:47 after pulling clear of defending champion Alex Mutsio in the final stages. Britain's David Weir secured his tenth Great North Run title in the men's wheelchair race, and Melanie Woods won the women's wheelchair race. This year's event, the 45th edition, saw an estimated 63,000 runners participate, including Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
