British cyclist Finlay Tarling, 19, has died after a crash during stage eight of the Volta a Portugal. The incident occurred on the 166.8km route from Melgaco to Fafe, leading to the neutralisation of the race.
Race organisers confirmed Tarling's passing, stating, "The organisation of the 87th Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta Jogos Santa Casa deeply regrets to announce the passing of British cyclist Finlay Tarling, from the NSN Development Team, following a serious accident that occurred during the 8th stage of the race."
Tarling was riding for the NSN Development Team, having signed a two-year deal ahead of the 2025 season. His team, NSN, also released a statement expressing their heartbreak and offering condolences to his family and friends. Tarling was a highly-rated talent, particularly as a time trialist, and had secured three bronze medals at the 2024 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships. His elder brother, Josh, is a world champion in the points race on the track.
