British cyclist Finlay Tarling has died at the age of 19 following a serious accident during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal. The incident occurred on the 166.8km route from Melgaco to Fafe.
Tarling, the younger brother of Netcompany-Ineos rider Josh, was competing for the NSN Development Team. He had previously raced for Great Britain on both road and track.
In a statement, NSN expressed their heartbreak, saying, "Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed." The race organisers and the Portuguese Cycling Federation also offered their condolences. The racing was stopped, and the scheduled podium ceremony was cancelled as a sign of "respect and mourning."
