Prime Minister Burnham's government is seeking to expand its policy unit with new hires in three specific areas: 'Growth & Macroeconomics', 'Public Control', and 'Work, Social Security & Pensions'. These new advisers will be based in Downing Street.
The recruitment drive comes approximately three months into Burnham's premiership. Some advisers who previously worked under Starmer were given three-month probation periods, and some who left the Starmer government early on have been brought back.
Job requirements for the new positions include "a track record of leading through ambiguity, pressure and change". The upcoming Budget may be short of radical policies as the Downing Street thinking unit is not yet fully established. Prime Minister Burnham's '10-year plan' speech is also anticipated by the end of the year.
