Shili Chen and Shouyong Zhang, both 77, have been charged with murder in California. Authorities allege the couple shot their son-in-law, Jonathan McKinsey, to death on Saturday in a public park.
Mr McKinsey, a 40-year-old gaming engineer for the New York Times, was reportedly shot in the parking lot of a sports complex in Dublin, east of San Francisco. Police detained the couple as they were driving away from the scene, according to Dublin police.
Prosecutors said Mr Zhang admitted to shooting Mr McKinsey during an interview, and a firearm he admitted to using was found in his car. Surveillance video reportedly shows Ms Chen and Mr Zhang shooting the victim "in concert".
The murder charges against Ms Chen and Mr Zhang include additional allegations of lying in wait and using a firearm. The alleged killing occurred a week before a scheduled hearing in Mr McKinsey's divorce case with the couple's daughter, Candice Jang.
