A south London tabby cat, Karl, who once resided at Camberwell College of Arts, is being remembered for his unique habits and community presence. Karl, described as an unassuming brown tabby, had learned to use a toilet during his time at the college, a skill that involved climbing onto the seat and aiming into the bowl.
Beyond his unusual party trick, Karl became a local legend on his street. He regularly accompanied children on school runs, walking ahead and waiting for their return. He also formed connections with neighbours, engaging in "chats" and remembering their routines for daily pats.
In 2008, Karl was killed by a dog. His death prompted a neighbourhood funeral, attended by many who had known him. A plaque was later commissioned and placed at cat height in the front garden, which new tenants chose to keep when the owner moved homes in 2019.
