The University of Cambridge has announced an investigation into Professor Jason Arday, citing "new information" related to his academic qualifications and career. Professor Arday, who is the youngest black professor appointed in the university's history, has faced accusations of plagiarism and embellishment.
Cambridge initially defended Professor Arday, describing him as "the victim of a vile campaign." However, the university's leaders reportedly felt its reputation was at risk as further questions arose regarding his claims.
Professor Arday first faced allegations of plagiarising his PhD thesis and some published academic research late last year. Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded his PhD in 2015, investigated these claims and did not uphold the charges of plagiarism, attributing them to "honest and reasonable error."
In a statement published on Wednesday evening, the University of Cambridge confirmed the investigation, adding that it would not comment further until the process concludes to ensure fairness. The university also noted that there are ongoing complaints regarding academic misconduct being handled in line with its research policy.
