A 17-year-old student from Liverpool, Ashamekh Bortata, drowned after getting into difficulty while swimming in a lake at Chirk Castle, an inquest has heard. His body was found a day after the incident.
Mr Bortata was on a day out with six friends when they visited the castle. After walking around the grounds, they found a fenced-off woodland and lake. Some of the group swam to a boat, and Mr Bortata, who initially stayed on a pontoon, jumped in and attempted to swim to them before calling for help.
One of his friends called emergency services, stating he had tried to help but lost his grip. Police and an air search were conducted, and an underwater search team member recovered the student's body the following day.
Soulaiman Bortata, his father, described his son as an "excellent and popular" A-level student at Liverpool Life Sciences University Technical College, with ambitions to study engineering at University College London. John Gittins, coroner for north Wales east and central, recorded the cause of death as drowning and a conclusion of misadventure.
