His Majesty's Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) has confirmed that camera glasses are banned from its sites across England and Wales. This move follows an existing strict policy on filming and recording within courts and tribunals.
The ban on smart glasses, including those made by Meta, comes amidst growing concerns over privacy. Earlier this year, the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) intervened after reports that contractors had viewed intimate footage captured by users of Meta's AI smart glasses.
Employment lawyers are now urging businesses to review their workplace policies. Oliver Milton, a solicitor at TWM, stated that employers need to consider the use of smart glasses in the workplace, particularly as sensitive material can be uploaded to social media instantly. He also noted that misuse of smart glasses could lead to disciplinary action for employees, including dismissal.
