Camp Mystic is currently under a criminal investigation, with potential charges including manslaughter or negligent homicide. This follows the deaths of 27 girls during severe flooding in Texas last year, according to court documents.
Last week, search warrants were executed as investigators sought electronic communications from the camp's owners. They believe these communications could provide evidence related to manslaughter, negligent homicide, child abandonment, or other crimes. No charges have been filed, and a camp representative has not yet responded to requests for comment.
Brant Johnston of the Texas Rangers stated in an affidavit that Camp Mystic allegedly had insufficient emergency plans and did not conduct emergency drills or training. He also noted that some cabins reportedly lacked enough adult counselors. Johnston further wrote that the owners neglected to take precautions by moving children from low-lying cabins, despite having monitored late-night flood warnings.
The affidavit concluded that Camp Mystic, LLC was aware of and consciously disregarded a substantial and unjustifiable risk of death to the campers in their care. Twenty-five campers and two teenage counselors died on 4 July 2025, when the Guadalupe River overflowed its banks. Camp Mystic owner Richard Eastland also died in the flood.
