Celtic Shareholder Dermot Desmond Targeted by Fan Protest at Golf Tournament

Celtic's principal shareholder, Dermot Desmond, had tennis balls thrown towards him by protesting fans during a golf tournament at St Andrews on Saturday.

  • Fans threw tennis balls with pictures of Dermot Desmond's face crossed out onto the 15th green at the Alfred Dunhill Links golf tournament.
  • Desmond, 76, was escorted off the course by security following the disruption.
  • The Celtic Fans Collective released a statement on X, calling for change at the top of the club.

Celtic's principal shareholder, Dermot Desmond, faced a fan protest at the Alfred Dunhill Links golf tournament in St Andrews on Saturday. Tennis balls were thrown towards the 76-year-old during the pro-am event, landing on the 15th green.

The thrown tennis balls reportedly featured pictures of Desmond's face crossed out. Following the disruption, Desmond was escorted off the course by security personnel.

The Celtic Fans Collective later issued a statement on X, including video and pictures of the protest. The statement criticised Desmond, claiming he has "essentially been allowed to run Celtic Football Club whilst using his wealth to hide from supporters and accountability," and added that "Fans took the chance today to send a message that this arrangement cannot continue."

Supporters have reportedly criticised Desmond for an apparent lack of progress on the pitch. While Martin O’Neill’s side currently leads the Premiership table by two points over Rangers, they lost their last three games before the international break, including two defeats to Rangers and a 3-1 home loss to Ferencvaros in their opening Europa League fixture.
