Chelsea are reportedly weighing up a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, whose representatives have offered him to the London club. Villa are looking to offload the World Cup winner following their acquisition of Japan international Zion Suzuki, who they consider their long-term number one.
The potential transfer comes as Chelsea's goalkeeping situation faces renewed scrutiny after Robert Sanchez's performance in Monday's 3-2 win against Fulham. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher stated on Sky Sports that Chelsea "will never win the league with Sanchez in goal," with fellow pundit Gary Neville adding that the club needs a new goalkeeper.
A deal to sell Martinez to Juventus fell through earlier in August, and he was not in the squad for Villa's opening Premier League defeat. Villa are open to selling Martinez, who joined from Arsenal in 2020, as they aim to lower the average age of their squad and comply with financial rules.
Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso expects midfielder Enzo Fernandez to be involved against Luton in the Carabao Cup despite ongoing speculation linking him with Manchester City. Alonso confirmed Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra are still injured, but Cole Palmer has been passed fit.
