US death row inmate Christa Pike, 50, has been discharged from hospital and returned to prison, her lawyers announced on Saturday. She is continuing to receive medical care at the prison.
Pike had been in a critical condition after surviving two lethal injections of the drug pentobarbital on 30 September. She regained consciousness and began speaking earlier this week, according to her lawyers.
Her case is considered to be in uncharted territory, as Pike is believed to be the only person to have survived an execution attempt by lethal injection. She was 18 when she was involved in the beating, torture, and killing of 19-year-old Slemmer.
