Nine people, including children, died in a mass murder on Friday in Erie, Pennsylvania, according to authorities. A gun-wielding attacker reportedly opened fire outside a home before entering the property.
Police responding to reports of gunfire at approximately 5pm discovered two women dead in the street. The situation developed into a standoff with police officers and tactical teams surrounding the residence.
Inside the home, officers found seven additional victims, including children, along with the suspected attacker. Investigators believe the attacker died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Erie’s police chief, Rick Lorah, described the scene as among the most distressing he had witnessed.
Authorities confirmed the suspect is deceased and stated there is no ongoing threat to the public. Investigations into the circumstances and motive for the violence are continuing.
