People who have relocated to the UK from Hong Kong have found a sense of community through the Crafting Smiles crocheting group. The initiative, which began in Bracknell, Berkshire, has expanded to more than 50 locations nationwide and now has over 1,000 members.
The Bristol branch of Crafting Smiles, established in October 2025, brings together over 60 people from the West of England once a fortnight. Members, including Joyce Wilmot, described the group as a "piece of home," offering opportunities to make friends and engage in creative projects.
Since its inception, Crafting Smiles members across the country have produced more than 48,000 handmade gifts and raised over £38,000 for various community causes. The group's activities have included making Remembrance poppies and baby items for charity, as well as crocheted hearts for hospital patients.
