Curtis Flowers, a Black man who was wrongfully imprisoned for more than 22 years, has died at the age of 56. His family confirmed he died on Wednesday at his home in Mississippi, attorney Rob McDuff told the Associated Press on Thursday.
Mr Flowers was 26 when he was arrested several months after the July 1996 shooting deaths of four people inside a furniture store in Winona, Mississippi. He was tried six times for the killings.
In 2019, the US Supreme Court overturned his conviction and death sentence, with Justice Brett Kavanaugh stating that the removal of Black prospective jurors deprived Mr Flowers of a fair trial. Mississippi dropped charges against him in September 2020, and he was released in December 2019 after a judge set bond.
