British tennis hopefuls Harriet Dart and Fran Jones have begun their US Open qualifying campaigns with victories. Dart, a two-time US Open second-round participant, overcame Jordyn Hazelitt with a 6-0 6-7 (1-7) 6-1 win in New York. She is now set to face 16-year-old American Kristina Penickova in the next round.
Fran Jones, who qualified for the US Open last year, defeated Italy's Nuria Brancaccio 6-3 6-4. Jones will next compete against Germany's Mona Barthel.
However, not all British players advanced. Jodie Burrage lost to Spain's Guiomar Maristany 7-6 (7-1) 6-4, and Henry Searle was beaten 6-1 6-2 by American 16-year-old Michael Antonius in the men's event. Heather Watson is scheduled to play her second-round qualifying match on Wednesday against Spain's Angela Fita Boluda.
In other matches, Britons Jacob Fearnley, Toby Samuel, Billy Harris, Harry Wendelken, and Jack Pinnington Jones are also returning to action in the men's draw, aiming to progress closer to the main draw. Players must win three qualifying rounds to reach the singles main draw, which is scheduled to begin on Sunday.
