Danielle Kirton, the daughter of Pete and Fran Gillam, who died in a Spanish wildfire, is seeking answers from the Spanish government regarding the evacuation process. Her parents died in mid-July while attempting to flee their home in Bédar, Almería, as a wildfire spread through the village. They were among 13 people killed in the fires in that area.
Ms Kirton, an assistant headteacher from Nottinghamshire, said that while a fire alert was issued at 4:30pm, the evacuation order did not come until over three hours later. She stated that the official emergency alert system, which uses mobile phones, was not activated for this incident, unlike in subsequent wildfires where there have been no civilian casualties.
Ms Kirton rejects claims made by Spanish politicians that those who died ignored instructions. She stated her parents were waiting for official advice and had a bag packed, ready to evacuate. She has called on Ed Miliband to support her in asking Spanish authorities to conduct a full investigation.
