Deborah Ann Woll, star of the upcoming video game God Of War: Laufey, has fired back at critics who are crying foul over the decision to feature her character, Faye, as the lead in this new instalment. The backlash is fierce, with some fans outraged that Kratos isn't centre stage in this spin-off – but Woll's not fazed, saying she's "totally unbothered" by the criticism.
The game itself promises a thrilling adventure for Faye as she navigates the treacherous realm of the 'Everywhen', where mythological gods clash and magic runs wild. According to the official description, Faye must battle through this afterlife landscape to protect her loved ones, and it's clear that Laufey is more than just a side character – she's a force to be reckoned with.
But what about the critics who say they're not happy about a woman being in the lead role? Woll was asked about this at a recent fan convention appearance, and her response was refreshingly candid: "It’s fine if it’s not your cup of tea but in no universe is it bad." She even agreed with one attendee's cheeky comment that some fans just hate to see a woman win.
Cory Barlog, the studio boss, has weighed in on the controversy too, assuring fans that God Of War: Laufey is still very much part of the larger narrative and that Kratos will always be at the heart of the series. Sony Santa Monica, the game's developer, have also taken to X (formerly Twitter) to reassure fans that Kratos is – and always will be – the God Of War.
So what does this mean for UK gamers? Well, it seems that God Of War: Laufey is still on track for release before the end of 2027, despite the controversy. And with its unique take on the rich mythology of the series, this spin-off could be just the thing to attract new players while keeping old fans hooked.
The anticipation continues to build – and we can't wait to get our hands on it!
