Democratic Socialists of America-aligned candidate wins Florida Senate primary

State representative Angie Nixon, aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has secured the Democratic nomination for Florida's US Senate race, marking the first statewide primary win for a DSA-aligned candidate.

  • Angie Nixon won the Democratic nomination for Florida's US Senate race, becoming the first DSA-aligned candidate to win a statewide primary.
  • In Alaska, Republican Senator Dan Sullivan and Democrat Mary Peltola won their primaries for a US Senate contest.
  • Several candidates endorsed by Donald Trump lost their primaries in Florida and Wyoming.

State representative Angie Nixon has won the Democratic nomination in Florida's US Senate race, defeating Alexander Vindman. This victory makes Nixon the first candidate aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) to win a statewide primary, despite not being endorsed by the group.

In Alaska, Republican Senator Dan Sullivan secured his primary win, and former congresswoman Mary Peltola won the Democratic nomination. They are set to compete in a significant US Senate contest. Primary results showed Peltola leading Sullivan, with 48% of the vote compared to his 42.8%.

The primary elections also saw mixed results for candidates endorsed by Donald Trump. In Wyoming, state superintendent Megan Degenfelder, backed by Trump, lost the Republican gubernatorial primary to state senator Eric Barlow. Similarly, Congressman Cory Mills, another Trump endorsee, lost his primary in Florida to Ryan Elijah.

Progressive candidates experienced varied outcomes. While Angie Nixon secured a win, DSA-endorsed challenger Oliver Larkin was defeated by Democratic congressman Jared Moskowitz in south Florida.

Why this matters: The Florida primary win for a DSA-aligned candidate indicates a willingness among Democratic voters to support candidates outside the party establishment.
