French author Édouard Louis has expressed his deep appreciation for Anne Carson's writing, noting her distinctive style and disregard for conventional literary norms. Louis recounted discovering Carson's work, specifically Antigonick, while stranded for 10 hours in a snowstorm on a bus in rural America.
Carson's inventiveness extends to the physical form of her books. Her work Nox was published as a box containing an accordion-folded sheet of notes and images. Similarly, Float consists of multiple booklets housed in a plastic envelope, and H of H Playbook is a wide rectangular facsimile edition.
Louis also highlighted the political dimension of Carson's work, noting her tendency to tell stories from the perspective of the defeated. For instance, in Autobiography of Red, she reinterprets the myth of Hercules and Geryon by focusing on the monster, Geryon, and imagining a homosexual affair between him and a young Hercules.
