A driver has been jailed for two years after a collision in Leicester resulted in the death of a taxi passenger and serious injuries to two others. Thomas Goulty, 36, admitted causing the death of Donna Brighton and serious injuries to Steve and Andrea Sidsaff by careless driving.
The court heard that Goulty was driving his Vauxhall Astra at 64mph in a 30mph residential area when he crashed into Sarwar Mohammad's taxi on 16 September 2023. Ms Brighton, who was celebrating her 60th birthday, was thrown from the taxi through an open window and suffered fatal head and chest injuries.
Mohammad, the taxi driver, also admitted causing death and serious injuries by careless driving. He received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work. Both drivers expressed remorse for the incident.
