Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has placed the onus on Ollie Watkins to explain his absence from the squad that suffered a 4-0 Premier League defeat against Brighton on Sunday. Villa played without a recognised striker at the Amex Stadium, amidst reports that England international Watkins is seeking a move to Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal.
Emery, when questioned about Watkins' omission, stated, "This question is for him. I can't answer. I can answer only with my silence." He further suggested calling Watkins or his agent for a response, adding, "It's not my responsibility."
The Europa League champions have reportedly rejected four bids from Al Hilal for Watkins, and a transfer agreement is not currently close. Without Watkins, Villa found themselves 4-0 down within 31 minutes, following an own goal, a close-range finish, and a quickfire double. Midfielder Joao Gomes was also sent off on his league debut before half-time, adding to Villa's woes.
Villa have experienced a summer exodus since winning the Europa League and qualifying for the Champions League. Key players Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans, and Morgan Rogers have been sold, with ongoing speculation that goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and Watkins may also depart.
