England face early Rugby League World Cup exit after Tonga defeat

England's Rugby League World Cup hopes hang by a thread after a 30-12 defeat to Tonga, leaving them reliant on points difference for a semi-final spot.

  • England lost 30-12 to Tonga in the Rugby League World Cup.
  • The defeat means England's progression to the semi-finals likely depends on points difference.
  • Head coach Brian McDermott stated he saw "tonnes of positives" despite the loss.

England's Rugby League World Cup campaign is in a precarious position following a 30-12 defeat to Tonga in Perth. The loss leaves head coach Brian McDermott's side potentially needing to rely on points difference to reach the semi-finals.

Isaiya Katoa delivered a strong kicking performance for Tonga, contributing to their victory. England trailed 10-0 at halftime but managed to reduce the deficit to four points early in the second half after AJ Brimson scored.

However, Tonga extended their lead with Haumole Olakau'atu scoring a brace, effectively ending England's chances of a comeback. A late try from Dom Young was not enough to alter the outcome.

Despite the setback, McDermott remained positive, stating he could take "tonnes of positives" from the game. He acknowledged the need to address issues like losing possession and emphasised focusing on winning their upcoming games against France and Papua New Guinea.

Why this matters: The defeat puts England's Rugby League World Cup semi-final hopes in jeopardy, potentially leading to an early exit from the tournament.
