Jimmy Rimmer, the former Aston Villa and Manchester United goalkeeper who won the European Cup, has passed away at 78. The Southport-born player was part of Manchester United's squad that triumphed in the 1968 European Cup, where he was on the bench for their win against Benfica.

Rimmer also started Aston Villa's 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the 1982 European Cup final, though he was substituted early due to a neck injury. He played every game during Villa's run to that final, as well as in their 1980-81 league title-winning season.

During his career, Rimmer made 229 league appearances for Aston Villa and also played for Swansea City and Arsenal, where he was named player of the season in 1974-75.
