Former CIA director John Brennan has been subpoenaed to testify before a Florida grand jury next month, his lawyer confirmed. The subpoena is part of a Department of Justice investigation into whether former law enforcement and intelligence officials conspired against Donald Trump.
Ken Wainstein, an attorney for Brennan, disclosed in a court filing that prosecutors issued the subpoena last Thursday. Brennan is scheduled to appear before a grand jury in Fort Pierce, Florida, on 15 October.
Wainstein stated he was told the subpoena relates to a "far-reaching" criminal inquiry. This inquiry reportedly examines a theory that government officials who investigated Trump, including over Russia election interference in 2016 and his retention of classified documents, conspired to deprive him of his civil rights.
The subpoena was delivered on the same day that Joe diGenova, the prosecutor leading the investigation, resigned. A person familiar with the matter described displeasure from the Justice Department and White House over the investigation's pace and management.
Brennan's attorney also said he was informed by a prosecutor that Brennan remains a target in a Washington-based investigation into whether he lied to Congress in 2023. Brennan and his attorneys have consistently denied this claim.
