Former JPMorgan Chase executive Jes Staley informed US lawmakers that he repeatedly shared confidential and market-sensitive bank information with Jeffrey Epstein. This admission, along with Staley stating he was at one point named a trustee of Epstein's estate, comes from a transcript released by the House oversight committee on Wednesday.
During a closed-door interview on 24 July, Staley reportedly divulged details to Epstein including the bank’s communications with the Federal Reserve during the 2008 financial crisis, a figure of $44bn in private bank inflows over two weeks, and information on pending deals. He also admitted to sharing other confidential JPMorgan information.
Staley defended these exchanges, stating he believed he had the authority to share information when he considered it appropriate. He maintained a close professional relationship with Epstein but claimed he was unaware of Epstein's crimes.
He also testified that he informed Epstein about the bank's concerns regarding large cash withdrawals and that Epstein had been designated a high-risk client. Staley confirmed he signed documents related to the Epstein trust in 2014 and an amendment in 2015, but later declined to serve as a trustee.
