A new guide has been published detailing recommended toys and gifts for eight-year-olds. The selection process involved an experienced toy tester, input from children's play specialists, and direct feedback from a group of eight-year-old testers.
The guide aims to balance what children enjoy with what parents seek in their homes, considering factors such as school skills and overall wellbeing. Items were chosen for their ability to keep children occupied for extended periods and to last into the tween stage.
Among the recommendations are a 3Doodler pen, a Jaques of London folding chess board, the Tom Gates book series, a Lego Mario Kart set, and the 'Oh My Pigeons!' party game. A scooter designed for older children and adults is also featured, noted for its durability and repairability.
Laura Moore-Williams, an early years consultant, highlighted that eight-year-olds are interested in more complex games, with many learning chess at school to develop focus and critical thinking.
