Expert Tips for Buying a Bike: A Guide to Types and Essentials

Experts have provided guidance on navigating the process of buying a bike, covering different types and essential accessories. The advice aims to help buyers make informed decisions based on their intended use, budget, and desired features.

  • Bike types are broadly categorised into hybrid, road, gravel, mountain, cargo, and folding.
  • Mandatory cycling equipment in the UK includes bike lights for night riding.
  • Experts recommend considering how a bike will be used, budget, and desired features before purchase.

New guidance has been released to assist individuals in purchasing a bicycle, addressing the complexities of the process. The advice, compiled with insights from cycling-tech YouTube channel founder David Arthur and bike-fitting studio owner Stephen Roche, categorises bikes into six main types: hybrid, road, gravel, mountain, cargo, and folding.

Hybrid bikes are suggested for urban use and short journeys, prioritising comfort. Road bikes are designed for speed on paved surfaces, while gravel bikes offer versatility across various terrains including tarmac, towpaths, and light trails. Mountain bikes are recommended for off-road riding, and cargo bikes provide an alternative to cars for transporting loads. Folding bikes are highlighted for city living and short commutes due to their compact storage.

Beyond the bike itself, essential accessories are also covered. While helmets are not mandatory for cyclists in the UK, most choose to wear one. Bike lights are legally required for cycling on roads at night, with a red light at the rear and a white light at the front. Locks are advised for securing bikes when unattended, and basic tools are recommended for addressing mechanical issues.

What this means for you: If you cycle on the road at night, you must have a red light mounted on the rear of your bike and a white light mounted on the front.
