Family dispute over finishing products goes to 'You Be The Judge'

A mother has accused her 21-year-old son of being wasteful by not finishing bottles and packets before opening new ones, leading to a domestic dispute featured in a Guardian column.

  • Mindy accuses her son Jasper of leaving small amounts in bottles, jars, and boxes, which she considers wasteful and a way for him to avoid cleaning.
  • Jasper states he prefers opening new containers for freshness and convenience, especially when a new product is readily available.
  • A Guardian online poll is open until September 16 to decide if Jasper should finish products and clean up.

A domestic disagreement between a mother and her son regarding household habits has been highlighted in The Guardian's 'You Be The Judge' column. Mindy, the mother, has accused her 21-year-old son, Jasper, of consistently leaving small amounts in bottles, jars, and boxes, such as ketchup, shampoo, and cereal packets, before opening new ones.

Mindy states that Jasper's habit is wasteful and creates additional work for her, as she is often left to finish the products, wash the containers, and take them for recycling. She believes he does this to avoid cleaning up and prefers everything to be fresh and new.

Jasper, in his defence, claims he is not deliberately trying to make his mother clean up. He explains that he dislikes using the last bit of a product, particularly when a new one is available, and prefers the freshness of a new item. He acknowledges that his habits can lead to clutter but states he will make more effort to finish or dispose of nearly empty containers.

Guardian readers are invited to participate in an online poll to judge whether Jasper should finish products and clean up. The poll is scheduled to close on Wednesday, September 16, at 9am BST.
