Football Association of Wales (FAW) chief executive Noel Mooney has called for Fifa president Gianni Infantino to step down, citing "harm that's been done to football." Mooney, who previously worked with Infantino at Uefa, believes the Fifa president should consider his position despite a controversial plan to sell stakes in the World Cup being scrapped.
Mooney stated that if he were speaking to Infantino, he would advise him to step down, acknowledging his past achievements but highlighting the recent episode concerning the proposed sale of commercial and ticketing rights. Wales was the first home nation to publicly withdraw its backing for Infantino's leadership bid earlier this month, with other nations reportedly following suit.
Infantino has been under increasing pressure over his plan to create a new company to manage commercial rights for Fifa competitions, which included selling 21% to a private investment company. Mooney also suggested that Fifa's governance, processes, and structures need review, expressing concern that "too much power that sits with one person" within the organisation.
