FC Copenhagen's women's team, FCK, has achieved back-to-back promotions to reach Denmark's top division, the A-Liga, but faces challenges in their first season.

  • FCK Women gained back-to-back promotions to reach the A-Liga within 26 months of their first league match in August 2024.
  • The team currently sits second from bottom after 10 fixtures in their inaugural top-flight season.
  • A recent derby against Brøndby drew a record A-Liga attendance of 8,047 fans at Parken.

FC Copenhagen's women's team, FCK, has reached Denmark's top division, the A-Liga, after securing back-to-back promotions within 26 months of their first league match in August 2024. The team's debut league game in 2024 against B73 Slagelse at Vanløse Idrætspark was attended by 5,165 fans.

Despite their rapid ascent, FCK Women are facing difficulties in their first season in the top flight. They are currently second from bottom after 10 fixtures and parted ways with head coach Kasper Klarskov Nielsen after three matches. Many players are balancing football with work or study while adapting to the physical demands of the A-Liga.

Romaney Pinnock, FCK's head of women's football, stated that the plan was always to reach the top division quickly. The club has leveraged the wider club's infrastructure, including marketing and commercial expertise, to build a distinct identity for the women's team. This has included a different kit, separate sponsors, and a unique matchday experience, with a recent derby against Brøndby drawing an A-Liga record attendance of 8,047 at Parken.

Forward Maria Hovmark noted that around 80-90% of the team had not played in the top league before, presenting a challenge for both players and the club. Pinnock indicated that the team would have a grace period of two or three seasons to establish themselves before being expected to embrace the FCK model of being winners.

Why this matters: The performance of FCK Women in the A-Liga could influence the development of women's football in Denmark, as the Danish Football Association (DBU) works to strengthen the domestic game through investment and increased exposure.
