A river in Rockhampton, Queensland, home to approximately 500 saltwater crocodiles, has received approval to host Olympic and Paralympic rowing and canoeing events for the Brisbane 2032 Games. The Fitzroy River has passed an independent technical assessment regarding its suitability as a venue.
The assessment focused on how the course would perform under various conditions, including weather patterns, water levels, and flood risk, both during the Games and in the lead-up period. It did not consider the crocodiles present in the river.
World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland stated that the extensive analysis confirms the Fitzroy River's capability to provide fair competition conditions for Olympic and Paralympic Rowing. Paddle Worldwide President Thomas Konietzko also expressed confidence that the course can deliver fair competition for Canoe Sprint athletes.
Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris previously downplayed concerns about crocodiles, comparing them to sharks in the ocean. He noted that the endorsement provides additional certainty for venue planning and Games delivery.
