Somerset's County Championship title hopes hit by Yorkshire defeat

Somerset's ambition for a maiden County Championship title has been significantly hampered following a heavy 185-run defeat to Yorkshire at Headingley.

  • Somerset lost by 185 runs to Yorkshire, their third defeat of the season.
  • Warwickshire now lead Division One by 11 points over second-placed Somerset.
  • Yorkshire's Ben Cliff achieved career-best match figures of 11-105.

Somerset's pursuit of a first-ever County Championship title has taken a significant blow after they suffered a 185-run defeat against Yorkshire at Headingley. This loss, their third of the season and second against Yorkshire, has seen them drop to second in Division One.

Starting day four chasing 287, Somerset were 73-3 but quickly collapsed to 79-6, eventually being bowled out for 101 just before 12:00 BST. Warwickshire now hold an 11-point lead over Somerset in Division One.

Yorkshire's bowling attack was relentless, with new ball seamers Ben Coad and Ben Cliff starring. Cliff finished with career-best match figures of 11-105, including eight wickets in the first innings. Coad claimed four wickets in the second innings.

Somerset will face Surrey at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton, in the final round of fixtures, which begins on Thursday.

Why this matters: The defeat significantly dents Somerset's chances of winning their first County Championship title, shifting the balance in Division One.
