Spain's national football coach, Luis de la Fuente, has unveiled his latest Nations League squad from Ceuta, a Spanish exclave in northern Africa. This announcement serves as a gesture of support for the territory, which has recently been at the centre of a migration crisis.
De la Fuente, releasing his first squad since Spain secured the World Cup, appeared in a video recorded in Ceuta alongside local residents. He stated, "This is Ceuta, this is Spain," reflecting a growing sentiment of backing for the territory.
The Spanish team is set to begin their Nations League campaign against England at Wembley Stadium on 26 September. For this match, and all subsequent games, players will wear two stars on their shirts, commemorating their second world title. Following the England fixture, Spain will host Croatia on 29 September and the Czech Republic on 3 October, before travelling to face Croatia again on 6 October.
The squad largely maintains the core of the World Cup-winning team. Notable changes include Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martínez replacing Joan García due to a minor knee problem, Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen stepping in for the retired Marcos Llorente, and Fermín López taking Gavi's place. Espanyol forward Roberto Fernández has also received his debut call-up.
