Five people were shot and killed in an apparent murder-suicide at a home in Douglas, Georgia, on Friday, authorities have said. All of the deceased were family members who lived at the residence.
Douglas police chief Brannen Pruette stated at a Saturday news conference that officers responded to reports of an active shooter on Friday. One of the victims reportedly placed the initial emergency call.
Responding officers found four deceased adults inside the home, with a fifth individual transported to a hospital where they were later pronounced dead. Details regarding how the incident unfolded, including who opened fire, remain unclear, according to police.
Hours before the shooting, a female victim had called police to complain that her husband was "killing her" with his smoking, and EMS transported her to a local medical centre. Police have not offered additional information, citing an ongoing investigation.
Douglas city manager Charlie Davis noted that this was the area's second murder-suicide incident in three months.
