Flock Safety, a surveillance technology company, has reportedly introduced a voluntary severance package for its employees. The company, which has a workforce of 1,500 people, anticipates that a significant number of staff will show interest in these buyouts.
According to a report in Wired, the company's internal announcement described these as the "most generous" packages it has ever offered. It is reported that Flock Safety plans to grant buyouts to a majority of interested employees.
The move comes as the company faces ongoing backlash regarding its license plate recognition technology. Wired also reported that without these voluntary departures, Flock Safety would "almost certainly" need to implement staff layoffs.
In August, The Washington Post identified 46 instances of alleged misuse of Flock technology by police officers. Both Florida and Texas have stated they will cease using the company's technology, and an anti-surveillance group reported that 90 cities dropped Flock in August.
