A former officer with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $200 million, including hundreds of gold bars, through a fraudulent scheme. The U.S. Department of Justice confirmed on Tuesday that David J. Rush admitted to one count of wire fraud.
Prosecutors stated that Rush, a Virginia resident, lied about his education and military experience to join the CIA. He then used his access as an employee to establish a top-secret, highly compartmentalised program, intending to divert U.S. government funds into his possession.
During his arrest, law enforcement discovered more than $46 million worth of gold bars at Rush's home, along with cars, watches, and over $2 million in cash, all linked to the fraud. Rush is scheduled for sentencing in late January 2027 and could face up to 20 years in prison.
